At the foot of the Flanders Hills and a mere stone’s throw from Greater Lille, La Gorgue, Nieppe, Sailly sur la Lys and Steenwerck stretch out along the river Lys. The area, under the Vallée de la Lys tourist office, is gradually developing its tourist potential and presenting itself as a centre for tourism based on traditions, heritage and the environment. Being in the Heart of Flanders, it is an area where festivity and celebration are at its core. The renowned conviviality which marks the passage of the seasons is seen in the numerous local festivities, often featuring our giants, Totor, Marie Groëtte and Odin. They are accompanied by town bands and folkdancing in a musical mêlée of bagpipes and other instruments.
