Greater Lille is home to History in that it was here that Charles de Gaulle was born and the earliest barracks were built by Vauban, and in that it provided the backdrop to numerous battles. Now the metropolitan district is fast becoming home to Nature, with new green open spaces such as the Parc de la Deûle, the Jardin Mosaïc and the rehabilitated banks of the Marque and the Lys.
